To submit material for the Circuit Ideas section

Concisely describe the real-world application involved, the weaknesses of the standard approach, and the benefits from using the suggested circuit or idea. The circuit should demonstrate some novel approach or creativity by the author. It cannot be trivial, or a rehash of a commonly known circuit with just minor changes. If the circuit contains an IC, it should reflect design creativity beyond the bounds of the IC. The IC's surrounding circuitry should not simply consist of the support components needed to get the IC up and running.

All items are edited, some heavily, before publication. But we must be able to understand what the author is trying to say.

In general, a Circuit Ideas piece runs between 400 and 700 words, along with one large circuit diagram or two smaller illustrations. The circuit diagram should not exceed one-half a magazine page and preferably should be smaller.

In general, the reasons for probable outright rejection of a submission include:

It involves patented or copyrighted material and would not be available for use by our readers without licensing.

- It consists of just a few components and most engineers would routinely come up with the same solution.
- The author's writing is too difficult to understand.
- It's a copy of a previous circuit design, with only minor modifications.
- A commercially available IC is the key element and the surrounding circuitry simply supports its typical operation.
- It is simply too big for publication.
- It is overkill-too much circuitry for too simple a problem.

or e-mail submissions, the following are the acceptable formats in order of preference:

FOR TEXT AND PROGRAM LISTINGS:
doc (Word), .txt, (or any Word-importable file type), otherwise send high-quality hard copy

FOR GRAPHICS/PHOTOS/SCREEN SHOTS (300 dpi or higher):
jpg, .tif, .eps, .bmp (PowerPoint files cannot be handled directly)
