Barrier TPE Alloys

Nov. 9, 2006
A new TPE alloy technology is for applications needing package barrier integrity, such as vial stoppers and medical films for IV bags.

Benefits of the material include an oxygen-permeation coefficient range of 2,000 to 20,000 cc.mil/m 2 .day.atm at 23°C (standard is 50,000 to 90,00 cc.mil/m 2 .day.atm at 23°C) and a moisture-vapor-transmission rate in the range of 2.3 to 3.8 gm/m 2 .day at 38°C/100% RH. The material boosts shelf life by a factor of 2 to 5. Features of the materials include ease of processing in conventional injection molding, blow molding, and extrusion thermoplastic-processing methods and a 40 to 90 Shore-A hardness range.
