A series of 58-mm, brushless dc motors from Thomson Airpax Mechatronics, Cheshire, Conn., is said to be smaller and more efficient than industry-standard packages. The motors feature a three-phase MOSFET PWM drive (with surface-mounted components) that eliminates the need for external controllers. Motors that are 46 and 55 mm long deliver 14 and 17 W respectively, but have peak power capability up to 100 W and provide 45 and 50 encoder pulses/revolution. Operating speed is 50 to 5,000 rpm without dynamic balancing or up to 10,000 rpm with dynamic balancing. The motors are recommended for applications ranging from office equipment and appliances to medical pumps and factory-automation equipment.
