Lightweight, Flame-Retardant Polymer Suits Aircraft Interiors

A flame-retardant polyetherimide (PEI) for aircraft interiors reportedly cuts part weight up to 15%.

Ultem 9085 PEI has better flow and ductility than its Ultem 9075 predecessor, so parts can have thinner walls without losing impact strength. It also has the highest modulus of any Ultem resin grade, is 25% more ductile and more durable. The resin is inherently flame retardant, with full flame/smoke/toxicity (FST) compliance, including OSU heat release of less than 55/55. It resists chemicals and is light in color.
