A linear motion system from ATR Strothmann in Ontario, Canada (www.strothmann.com), uses magnetic levitation and a linear motor, similar to a magnetically levitated train. The MagShuttle can move 330-lb payload at up to 5.5 m /sec with accelerations of 20m/sec 2 . There are no physical drive connections, so it can be used over long travel distances. An Indramat linear-induction motor replaces traditional belt, screw, and rack-style drives. The synchronous linear motor applies force directly to the shuttle carriage without a mechanical transmission.
