The board has two separate counting circuits, and uses a double counting method that can count input signals with no dead time and counts pulses over extended periods with a high-time resolution of 10 msec. It is fully controlled by dynamic link library (DLL) functions for common measurements. Users can also write programs based on DLL functions. The Windows-compatible M8784 installs in a PCI-bus slot on any desktop PC. Two M8784 boards can be simultaneously controlled from a PC for simultaneous dual-channel measurements. The maximum count rate is 50 MHz, with a maximum counter capacity of 2 32 counts/counter gate. It accepts signal pulse widths ≥8 nsec and has an input impedance of 50Ω.
