The recently developed Super U Series of self-priming pumps from Gorman-Rupp Co., Mansfield, Ohio (gormanrupp.com), are said to be the most-efficient (up to 75%) solids-handling pumps on the market. A volute-casing design minimizes friction losses and drag, while the efficient multivane open impeller handles solids up to 1.25 in. in diameter. And although varying loads push the pump off its peak operating efficiency, like all pumps, it's only by a few percentage points in the U Series. To keep the pump at or near its peak operation, users can adjust clearance between the impeller and wearplate without using shims. This can double the operational life of both components. Easy-grip handles and quick access to the interior without disconnecting piping simplify maintenance. They are available in 3, 4, and 6-in. discharge sizes and have a maximum capacity of 1,500 gpm with a maximum pressure head of 207 ft.
