This visualization depicting a frozen moment of Internet activity is part of a special exhibit called “Design and the Elastic Mind,” open through May 12 at New York City's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Young Hyun and Bradley Huffaker, researchers at the San Diego Supercomputer Center at the University of California, San Diego, created the image using a tool called “Walrus,” which lets users view large data sets with 3-D “hyperbolic geometry,” similar to looking through a fish-eye lens. The image shows roundtrip times of data packets sent from a web site in Herndon, Va. to hundreds of thousands of notes on the Internet. The MoMA exhibit highlights dramatic changes in society regarding time, space, matter, individuality, and the relationship between design and science. For more information, visit www.moma.org.
