Small AC-to-DC Converter

June 2, 2005
A dc-to-dc buck converter, the FX5545G108, delivers power density of more than 570 W/cu in. in a 20-port, surface-mount BGA package.

It measures 0.58 X 0.48 in. (4.7 X 12.2 mm) with a maximum height of 0.126 in. (3.2 mm). The device converts 2.5 to 6-V inputs to an output voltage range of 0.9 to 4.5 V with efficiencies up to 95%. The converter is rated for maximum current of 4 A and output power of 15 W, with a 1-mA shutdown current. It adjusts and stabilizes input power in point-of-load applications to a variety of semiconductor devices such as FPGAs, microprocessors, DSPs, and DDR-SDRAMs. The converter also stabilizes, filters, reduces ripple, and shifts dc-voltage levels, or stabilizes battery-voltage outputs at a specific lower voltage. Programmable PWM/PSM controls ensure ultrahigh efficiency, with the converter operating in synchronous rectified PWM mode under full load and shifting into externally controlled pulse-skipping mode under light load conditions. With 100% duty cycle control for PSM operation, the converter acts much like a saturated linear regulator to extract every bit of power from single-cell Li or triple-cell NiCd and NiMH battery packs and thus delivers the highest potential output voltage. It operates in temperatures from 40° to 85°C.
