Sterilizible 16-mm Brushless Motor

Jan. 12, 2006
Maxon's new "EC-16" sterilizible brushless motors deliver the performance and lifetime of a brushless motor in a sterilizible package.

By assembling the motor such that the coils are outside the rotor, good heat dissipation and high overload capability is attained. Steam sterilization is specified at 134O° C (273O° F) at up to 2.3 bar, for 20 minutes. Motor can be sterilized at least 100 times in an autoclave.

Motor diameter is 16 mm (0.63 in) while the length is 56 mm (2.2 in). Continuous output power is 40 watts, while maximum speed is 50,000 RPM. Maximum continuous torque is up to 12.6 mNm (1.78 oz-in) depending on the winding. Ambient temperature range is -20O to 135O C (-4O to 275O F). Utilizing high-energy neodymium magnets results in a very responsive mechanical time constant of 5 ms, while minimizing overall size. Complementing the motors is a sterilizable gearhead available in 55 ratios ranging from 3.8:1 to 4592:1, rated for up to 2 Nm (283 oz-in) continuous torque, with a maximum input speed of 8,000 RPM.

This high performance, sterilizible motor is well suited for a variety of applications including surgical, dental, and dermatological tools, as well as other bio-medical devices.
