Three Lights, One Package

Sept. 2, 2004
Three different sensing technologies, infrared, visible light, and vertical-cavity-surface-emitting laser (VCSEL), are available on nonfocused reflective switches that detect objects up to 2 in. away.
The OPB608 family is available with 890-nm infrared LED, infrared VCSEL at 850 nm, or visible red light at 660-nm wavelengths with a phototransistor as the sensing device. Sensors can detect reflective objects such as IR-reflective materials, polished steel, polished aluminum, and white and thermal paper. Devices are encapsulated in a filtering epoxy to reduce ambient light noise, which can cause inaccurate readings. Devices are 6.223 x 4.52 mm with a board-mounted profile of 4.7 mm. Through-hole and surface-mount versions are available.
