Turn Light Into Frequency

May 20, 2004
The TSL237 is a light-to-frequency converter featuring a dynamic range of 5,000,000 to 1, letting it capture light levels to 0.00002 lux.

It produces a squarewave output signal with frequency proportional to light intensity that interfaces directly to a microcontroller, DSP, or counter. Providing 16-bit resolution, it eliminates the need for a/d converters and amplifiers. Applications include automotive sensors, color calibration, and lighting control.
