Bubble wrap. The iconic packaging material was invented in 1957 by Marc Chavannes and Alfred Fielding in a small garage in Hawthorne, N.J. The two engineers were trying to create an easy-to-remove textured plastic wallpaper. When they realized it would make the perfect packaging material for fragile items, they coined it “Bubble Wrap.” In 1960, the men started the Sealed Air Corp. in Elmwood Park, N.J., to market the material. Today, the company’s bubble-wrap revenue exceeds $4 billion annually.
