Putting a new face on remote controls

Traditional rubber-keyed remote controls may be a thing of the past.

Pelikon Ltd., Cambridge, U.K. (www.pelikon.com), a developer of electroluminescent display technology for consumer electronics, has teamed up with Universal Electronics Inc., Cypress, Calif. (www.uei.com), to create an electroluminescent display for a universal remote-control face. Called Intelligent Illumination, it's a 0.5-mm-thick light-emitting flexible display on a PET substrate. The remote runs on 4 AAA batteries, weighs between 5 and 10 gm, and can control up to eight home-entertainment devices.
