Industrial connectivity includes any component that is in the path of delivering power or control signals to do useful work. Typical connectivity components include connectors and terminal blocks, motor starters and relays..

Industrial connectors are divided into four categories based on operating environments: commercial, industrial, military, and hermetic. In commercial applications, outside temperatures and atmospheric conditions are the least critical factors affecting performance. Generic connectors merely maintain electrical continuity, allowing use of low-cost materials. Industrial connectors are devised to handle more rugged environments encompassing hazards that include thermal shock, corrosion, vibration, physical jarring, and sand and dust.
