Save time with simulation software

Aug. 4, 2008
This month, we take a look at some of the newest simulation tools

Simulation software performs virtual testing of mechanisms

NEi Motion and Kinematics software by Fedem Technology simulates dynamic mechanisms, determining the forces, stress, deformation, fatigue, and life of mechanical systems with moving parts. It can analyze a wide variety of structures, such as x-y positioning tables, articulating robotic mechanisms, vehicle suspension systems, and more.

By integrating nonlinear dynamics with finite element analysis (FEA) technology, the software can display results in a range of formats including animations, contour plots, and graphs. Engineers save development time and effort with a better and quicker design process, fewer prototypes, and more targeted testing, achieving faster time to market. Costly design flaws can be caught early and iterative redesign avoided. Also included are insights and what-if studies to spur innovation and help optimize product performance. Dynamic simulation saves time on prototypes

Simulation tools from LMS support engineering development early in the product design cycle and make downstream testing more effective. They also tend to save time because it’s usually easier to create a model than to build a physical prototype.

LMS simulation tools reach across all disciplines of engineering, including motion, noise, vibration, structural dynamics, thermal, kinematics, combustion, and durability. They are available in three “simulation suites,” including Imagine.Lab 1D Multi-Domain System Simulations, Virtual.Lab 3D Dynamic Simulations, and OPTIMUS Simulation Optimization. Visit the web site (www.lmsintl.com) and learn how Boeing, John Deere, General Motors, and others have used these tools to save development time and cost, while producing high quality products with less physical testing.

Software analyzes geometric tolerance stack-up

To design and build high quality products, engineers must understand tolerances and the impact of manufacturing variation on product designs. With Pro/ENGINEER Tolerance Analysis Extension (TAX) powered by CETOL technology, design engineers have powerful tolerance analysis capabilities within their design environment. The program makes it easy to analyze, visualize, and understand geometric tolerance stack-up and dimensional variations that can impact designs. The result is shorter product development cycles, lower product cost, and higher quality designs.

As part of the Pro/ENGINEER family of integrated 3D CAD/CAM/CAE solutions, the new extension is fully associative. Any change made to the design is automatically reflected in all downstream deliverables without any translation of model information. Eliminating data translation saves time and avoids the possibility of translation errors in the design. The new TAX function was introduced in January, along with the launch of Pro/Engineer Wildfire 4.0. For more information, visit www.ptc.com/go/proengineer or call (781) 370-5000.
