Software Developments for Additive Manufacturing

Software that supports additive manufacturing (AM) continues to improve, making intricate designs and lattices possible in the AM space.

The software that supports additive manufacturing is a vital part of the 3D printing process—arguably as important as the 3D printer itself. Computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering software all can help support the additive manufacturing process.

Most engineers will benefit from exposure to CAD and CAE software tools, but they should also be familiar with CAM, according to Michigan State University’s Master’s Engineering Program website. Knowing how CAD and CAM interact can help improve the design and analysis phase of planning products and structures.

Given the ever-increasing use of software for additive manufacturing, Machine Design’s coverage of it continues to grow. In March, we are dedicating a full week of coverage on the topic to help our audience further expand its understanding of this piece of additive manufacturing.

Each day during the week of March 11, new content will be published on our website. We’ll examine market trends, new technology developments and some use cases for how CAD/CAM/CAE software is used for additive manufacturing, including 3D printing and post-print processes.
