  • The Timken Company, Canton, Ohio completed the sale of its Linear Motion Systems (LMS) division — Timken S.p.A in Milan, Italy, and Timken Deutschland GmbH in Stuttgart, Germany, — to Overseas Industries S.p.A., an Italian firm. LMS designs and produces linear guides for industrial equipment manufacturers, and in 2004 had net sales of about $40 million (32 million Euro). LMS also distributes needle roller bearings marketed under the Nadella brand. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.

The sale includes the Nadella brand. Timken will retain the European needle bearing manufacturing facilities and transition needle bearing sales to Timken Torrington.

The company has also been awarded $7 million under an existing $20 million U.S. Air Force contract for hybrid bearing development. Timken will focus on quality assurance of rolling elements and new cage materials for bearings used in current and next generation gas turbine aircraft engines.

The $20 million is part of the Versatile Affordable Advanced Turbine Engine program Phase One, a joint initiative between the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, NASA, and the U.S. aerospace industry.
