Assembly components online

Nov. 18, 2004
A manufacturer of custom automation equipment credits an online catalog with speeding the process of custom sizing frequently needed components.

Misumi-America parts come in metric and inch dimensions. The catalog is online but also on paper and CD.

Misumi's online catalog is based on 3DpartStream.net from SolidWorks. Once users find a needed component, dropdown menus help size it. The image of the locating pin is a 3D model that can be rotated and zoomed for a close examination, and then downloaded into an assembly.

"It would cost upwards of $50 to make a locating pin in-house or outsource it to a machine shop. But Misumi ships the same pin in six days for $10," says Ron Karka, project manager for Stryver Manufacturing, Dayton, Ohio. Misumi America in Chicago, says it can produce over 500,000 custom components for assembly automation which are engineered to the inch standard. Products include linear shafts, locating pins, bearings with housings, positioning pins, washers, spacers and collars.

The catalog's coding system lets users specify material, tolerances, critical dimensions, and finish without a design drawing.
