CAD configurator gets credit for economical prototypes

An online configurator let life-science instrument maker Luminex Corp., Austin, hold the line on prototyping costs.

Luminex uses an online CAD configurator from Misumi to produce instrument prototypes economically.

An online configurator let life-science instrument maker Luminex Corp., Austin, hold the line on prototyping costs. "The rapid availability of CAD models lets us do several design iterations before buying parts, which helps reduce the amount of parts that never find their way into the finished machine," says Roland Schneider, Luminex Director of Instrument Production and Advanced Manufacturing Engineering.

"We can now finish designing a new analyzer by downloading native CAD files directly into our assembly drawings. Parts are then ordered and scheduled for delivery on the date we plan to build a machine," adds Schneider. Typical parts ordered from Misumi this way include shafts, bushings, timing pulleys, and belts.

The CAD configurator is on the Web site of Misumi USA Inc., Schaumburg, Ill.
