Scanning for Ideas: Shaft collar with adjustable clamping

May 8, 2008
EasyLock shaft collars from Amacoil Inc., Aston, Pa., (amacoil.com) can exert 90 to 1,124 lb of holding force on case-hardened shafts (Rockwell 55 or higher) using a flat metal ring canted at an angle along the shaft.

Users can adjust that force using a hand-operated control on the device. A quick-release mechanism makes it easy to reposition the clamp or remove it from the shaft. They can be used to hold tools and reels in place on shafts. The maintenance-free device is available in eight sizes for shafts ranging from 10 to 40 mm in diameter. (The 35 and 40-mm sizes use a thumbscrew-release control instead of a quick-release mechanism.)
