International Student Design Competition

International Student Design Competition

For the eighth time in 14 years, Kansas State University has pulled off a first-place win at the ASABE 14th Annual International ¼-Scale Tractor Student Design Competition. With 2,199 points out of 2,320, Kansas State held off strong efforts by the University of Kentucky (2,187) and Purdue University (2,186). Kentucky repeats as runner-up for a decade-long string of top-seven finishes. Purdue moved up from a fifth-place finish last year.

Rounding out the top five are the University of Saskatchewan, which also took fourth place last year, and the University of Manitoba, jumping up to fifth place from 17th last year and earning it the Most Improved award.

Kansas State takes home the Detra-Wehner traveling trophy, a plaque, $1,000, and a $2,000 scholarship sponsored by CNH, to be awarded to a team member of the team’s choosing. All other winners received plaques, and first and second runners-up received cash awards of $700 and $500, respectively.

The Competition provides a realistic “360°” workplace experience. Teams are given only an engine and a set of tires and spend the academic year designing and building utility or recreational pulling tractors. The tractors run on a 10% ethanol fuel blend. Judging is based on a written design report, a design inspection, and a formal presentation to industry experts. Corporate sponsors include AGCO, Briggs & Stratton, Case IH, Deere & Company, New Holland, SolidWorks, and Titan International. Additional support is provided by Campbell Scientific, Inc., GSI Grain Systems, Caterpillar, Katie McDonald Photography, Claas, RCI Engineering, Advanced Technology Services, Central City Scale, igus Inc., Miller Electric Manufacturing, Star Equipment, Kentucky Corn Growers Association, Holy Cow Motorsports, Walz Scale, Midwest Super Cub, Birkey’s Farm Store, and Kelly Sauder Rupper.
