For multidisciplinary engineers who drive innovation in machine design, selecting advanced motion systems that balance precision, durability and integration flexibility is part of the process.
The latest developments in motion technology offer solutions that streamline design, reduce maintenance and optimize performance across demanding applications—whether in industrial manufacturing, robotics or aerospace.
Machine Design rounded up a selection of state-of-the-art motion components and systems, from lubricant-free linear guides and versatile X-Y stages to integrated servo actuators, ultra-low-power IoT sensing platforms and dual-rated industrial disconnect switches. Each solution is engineered to empower machine designers with enhanced control, compact footprints and robust reliability, helping push the boundaries of modern mechanical systems.
Compact PTFE-free Linear Guide
Igus introduces the drylin WWP linear guide with a lubrication-free polymer carriage and aluminum rail. It uses integrated polymer rings and a preloaded steel ball for discrete, audible positioning clicks without electronic or mechanical levers. The guide supports static loads up to 100 N vertically and 50 N horizontally. Available in customizable lengths and finishes, it is designed to be up to 65% lighter than conventional ball-bearing systems. Constructed from PFAS-free, solid-lubricant-embedded polymers, it requires no external lubrication and meets low-fogging standards, suitable for space- and weight-sensitive applications in vehicles and aircraft.
Integrated Servo Linear Actuators
Tolomatic Inc. introduces servo linear actuators with integrated servo motors, available in ball and roller screw variants. The IMA and IMA-S models offer compact, space-saving designs suited for applications requiring precise positioning, dynamic movement and force repeatability. The stainless steel IMA-S features an IP69K hygienic rating for food and beverage settings. Both models are made to provide durability against shock and vibration while reducing commissioning and maintenance efforts.
X-Y Stage Enables Flexible Design
The IKO PD…S X-Y parallel drive stage employs a unique mechanism converting ball screw actuator linear motion into X-Y movement via two parallel shafts. This design places motors in a fixed position, eliminating interference and enabling an open, accessible workspace. The compact unit supports X-Y, diagonal and circular motions with integrated maintenance-free IKO C-Lube ML guides for precision. It requires no additional wiring or cable carriers and prioritizes reliability through durable construction. The PD…S stage aims to facilitate accurate positioning while maintaining workability and design flexibility in compact installations.
Ultra-Low-Power IoT Motion Solution
TDK, in collaboration with Renesas, presents an ultra-low-power sensing and processing reference design integrating the Renesas RA2L2 MCU and TDK’s InvenSense ICM-42688-P 6-axis MEMS MotionTracking device. The single board supports USB Type-C Release 2.4 and combines a 48 MHz Arm Cortex-M23 processor with a 3-axis gyroscope and accelerometer offering low noise performance. Optimized hardware and software support rapid prototyping for IoT, industrial, portable smart devices, AR/VR peripherals, wearables and robotics. This compact solution targets energy-efficient, precise motion sensing applications requiring extended battery life and fast development cycles.
High-Force Linear Servo with Open Aperture
Moticont’s HVCM-095-064-051-01 is a hollow core linear voice coil servo motor featuring a 50.8 mm (2.000 in.) open aperture and a 38.1 mm (1.500 in.) stroke. It delivers a continuous force of 68.3 N and peak force of 215.9 N (10% duty cycle). The brushless, non-commutated design offers low inertia, high acceleration, zero cogging and zero backlash. Its open aperture supports optics or cabling passage, and the compact 95.2 mm diameter and length facilitate integration. The motor is suitable for precision positioning, optical focusing, vibration testing and laser applications.
No-Weld Adjustable Bolted Bracing
PFlow Industries offers a no-weld adjustable bolted bracing system designed for edge-of-mezzanine VRC installations where welding is prohibited. The bracing arms are pre-cut to length for project-specific fits, allowing quick, safe assembly with minimal on-site modifications. Featuring horizontal and vertical adjustability of up to 2 in., the system supports fine-tuning during installation. Certified seismic and PE rated, it maintains structural integrity comparable to traditional welded bracing while enhancing installation safety and efficiency in indoor and outdoor environments.
Dual-rated AC/DC Disconnect Switches for Industrial Control
Altech Corp. offers dual-rated LSF and RT series AC/DC disconnect switches designed for industrial and manufacturing applications. Rated for 600VAC and 60VDC, these switches aim to eliminate the need for separate AC and DC components, helping to streamline inventory and installation. The LSF series offers DIN-rail and base mounting with an extended handle option featuring interlocks for improved safety. The RT series provides a compact door-mount solution with a front panel knob and rear terminals for easy installation in standard 22.5-mm push-button panel holes. They are made from durable, shock- and chemical-resistant plastics with silver contacts and rivets, and the spring-loaded design is made to prevent contact arcing under DC laods. They are available in 16A, 30A and 40A versions and UL 60947-4-1 certified.
