The 612 Scaglietti, the newest aluminum-intensive Ferrari, has a lighter and stiffer body structure than its predecessors. This thanks to the car's aluminum spaceframe designed by Alcoa Advanced Transportation Systems, Medona, Italy (www.alcoa.com). The frame weighs 37% less than a comparable steel structure and its torsional stiffness is improved by 58% over the steel frame used on the Ferrari F456. The 12-cylinder, front-engine 2+2 sports car will have a larger wheelbase, letting Ferrari design and engineer models with more passenger space. Full-series production begins later this year.
