Special memory modules dubbed MiniDIMMs from Micron Technology Inc., Boise, Idaho, target networking and communications equipment markets. The devices get their name from the use of a double data rate 2 (DDR2) verylow-profile (VLP) registered and unbuffered mini dual-in-line format. Their 0.72-in. (18.29-mm) height lets designers squeeze more modules in less board space to boost performance of networking servers, routers, switches, gateways, hubs, and bridges.

The low profile permits the use of vertical sockets rather than conventional angled memory sockets, which shrink the board footprint. It also improves airflow to lower device operating temperatures and improve system reliability.

VLP MiniDIMMs are backward compatible with existing MiniDIMM sockets and come in densities of 256 and 512 Mbytes, and 1 Gbyte. The PC2-5300 and PC2-6400 DDR2 VLP registered and unbuffered MiniDIMM samples are available now, with volume production expected later this year.
