The AS5040 system-on-chip integrates field-sensing Hall elements, analog front-end and digital signal processing, in a single device. Applications include motion control, robotics, brushless dc motor commutation, power tools, steering-wheel position sensing and headlight control, powerseat position indicators, and transmission-box encoders.

The contactless device has a resolution of 1,024 counts/rev and simultaneously outputs absolute, incremental, and pulse-width-modulated digital signals. A user-programmable index/zero position permits rotational speed measurement, while the synchronous serial-interface output gives absolute position data. The AS5040 can be specially configured through an integrated one-time-programmable internal register. An internal voltage regulator permits operation at either 3.3 or 5 Vdc.

The AS5040 tolerates misalignment of the magnetic source and includes a failure-detection circuit that monitors magnet placement during operation. The AS5040 operates over a temperature range of 40 to 125°C and comes in a SSOP 16 (5.3 6.2-mm) lead-free package.
