Sounds good, gets to market fast thanks to 3D CAD

July 7, 2005
An aftermarket automotive-exhaust manufacturer found its new 3D CAD system helped turn out new designs faster than previously possible.

The 3.5 and 4-in.-diameter kits are available for the Corvette C6. Corsa says its reflective soundcancellation technology reduces back pressure and tunes out annoying droning and booming noises in performance exhaust systems for cars, trucks, SUVs, and boats. The Corsa Web site includes sound files for several vehicles.

Corsa Performance Exhausts manufactures noise-cancellation devices that make cars and boats sound as good as they perform. Its Director of Product Development Gautam Pathak credits SolidWorks CAD with ease of use, a short learning curve, and an integrated ability to turn out production drawings that let the firm cut as much as a week from its development schedules.

"We cater to performance-oriented drivers who by nature are early adopters, so time-to-market is critical to success. What's more, with thousands of dollars of revenue at stake for every new product, it's important we launch as quickly as possible," explains Pathak.

The previous CAD system could generate only 3D models. But it took another week or so to generate drawings needed to complete a project.

Pathak says engineers working on marine products also use SolidWorks 3D capabilities to quickly produce increasingly complex products. The CAD system's PDMWorks facility helps manage a burgeoning parts library and ensures accuracy. And CosmosWorks simulation software lets engineers point and click to test stress, strain, and yield on exhaust joints and critical manufacturing machines.
