Boeing 7E7 work already spanning the globe

Sept. 2, 2004
The Boeing 7E7 will be the most-advanced and efficient commercial airplane in its class, says Boeing, and will set new standards for environmental responsibility and passenger comfort.

To hit these marks, Boeing and software developer Dassault Systèmes, Paris (www.3ds.com), are extending the V5 PLM suite of engineering programs (Catia, Delmia, Enovia, and SmarTeam) to change how Boeing designs, simulates, assembles, and manufactures aircraft. The business model for Boeing and its partners will be based on a global, digital work environment that operates 24 hr a day, year round.

The two companies are creating a virtual-development workspace called the 7E7 Global Collaboration Environment (GCE). Boeing will use it to digitally design, build, and test every aspect of the 7E7 and its manufacturing processes before production begins.

Boeing will standardize its use of specifications, engineering rules, operational parameters and simulation results. Partners and suppliers in the GCE will also implement the virtual product development platform.

Delmia models of the 7E7 factory will simulate the construction of every production cell and aircraft structure. The simulations will spot and eliminate production problems — before production.

The factory was modeled in Dassault's Delmia for the production of Falcon business jets. Boeing will generate similar modeling for the production of the 7E7 Dreamliner.
