Samsung Electronics has made the thinnest cell phone, the Ultra Edition 6.9 and 9.9, with the help of Agere Systems' innovative chip designers. The Ultra Edition 6.9 measures less than ¼-in. deep (6.9 mm) and weighs only 2.3 oz.

The phones contain Agere's sceptre HPE 2.5-generation GSM/E-GPRS chip set transmits data at up to 384 kilobits per second, keeping it in line with the 2.5-generation Edge standard. Agere stacks one memory chip on top of the base-band chip to reduce the phone's size. Typically, cell phones have chips on both sides of the circuit board, making phones thicker.
