Racing cars rely on Timken bearings

April 3, 2003
When Lola Champ cars take the track for the 2003 CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams) season, the wheel ends will be equipped with Timken tapered roller bearings.

Lola Cars International Ltd., Huntingdon, England (www.lola-group.com), specified Timken bearings as part of the chassis they produce for the Champ Car World Series. Team Rahal, Hilliard, Ohio (www.rahal.com), a franchise member of CART, played a key role in bringing the Timken Co., Canton, Ohio (www.timken.com), to the attention of Lola Cars. Team Rahal engineers were concerned about the ability of existing wheel-end bearings to hold up under brutal racing conditions and turned to Timken, a Rahal technical sponsor, for advice. Timken tapered roller bearings are reportedly qualified to handle the high speeds, cornering forces, and extreme loads generated by a CART racer traveling at over 220 mph.
