Way cleared for second-generation RFID

June 3, 2004
Manufacturers and technology providers have submitted a formal protocol definition for RFID (radio-frequency identification) systems.

The definition would pave the way for rapid adoption of a worldwide RFID standard known as Electronic Product Code (EPC), Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) Generation 2. The proposed definition meets user requirements outlined by leading RFID adopters, including the U.S. Dept. of Defense. Proponents say it fully meets user requirements, works worldwide, meets international standards, and provides a path to low-cost RFID tags and readers.

To present-day systems, EPC UHF Generation 2 RFID adds the ability to change and update information on each tag as it proceeds through various points in the supply chain. The companies supporting the proposed protocol include Texas Instruments, Intermec Technologies Corp., Philips Semiconductors, SAMsys Technologies, Zebra Technologies Corp., Impinj Inc., and others.
