Aerospace-Grade Adhesive

June 2, 2005
A new aerospace tape, Polyken 296FR, can replace pins and rivets in cargo compartments where high adhesion and flame resistance is critical.

The glass-cloth tape passes Boeing, Airbus, U.S., and European flame-retardant testing. It also meets Boeing Material Specification BMS 5-146 requirements for cargo-liner joint-sealing tapes. It does not contain polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs), abiding by EU 76/769/EEC. The tape has an adhesion-to-cargo-liner rating of 30 oz/in., an adhesion-to-steel rating of 45 oz/in., and a tensile strength of 133 lb/in. Total tape thickness is 0.0075 in. and total weight is 6.87 oz/ yd2. It cures in 24 hr and comes in 36-yd rolls that are 1, 2, 3, and 4-in. wide.
