Blind-threaded inserts simplify assembly

One method is to use blind-threaded inserts that can be installed without access to the backside of the panel. Atlas Engineering, Kent, Ohio, makes a variety of such fasteners. Each is installed with a special pneumatic or pneumatic/hydraulic tool, which puts the insert into a properly sized hole, draws the fastener in, and then compresses the unthreaded portion of the insert wall. The insert bulges and clamps against the panel. The inserts are suitable for painted or unfinished panels and can be placed near edges.
