Thermoformed copolyester is a shoo-in for a shoemaker

Transparency and high impact resistance were key factors that led designers at Plano Trio in Brazil to spec Spectar copolyester resin sheets from Eastman Chemical Co., Kingsport, Tenn., for point-of-purchase displays that showcase Rider shoes.

Brazilian shoemaker Grendene has developed more than 70 different formulations of PVC for its injection-molded shoes. The company is now using Eastman's Spectar copolyester sheets to form the new point-of-purchase displays for Rider shoes.

Transparency and high impact resistance were key factors that led designers at Plano Trio in Brazil to spec Spectar copolyester resin sheets from Eastman Chemical Co., Kingsport, Tenn., for point-of-purchase displays that showcase Rider shoes. The Brazilian shoemaker Grendene uses the POP displays in over 85 countries.

According to MÁrcio Gonçalves, Plano Trio merchandising designer, Grendene was well satisfied with the vacuum-formed POP displays made from Spectar copolyester sheets. "The possibility of designing products with creative shapes combined with such performance qualities as transparency and good impact resistance, makes Spectar an exciting and interesting product for us," declares Gonçalves.

Spectar copolyester extrudes into plastic sheets that are sparkling clear, tough, chemically resistant, odor-free, and easy to form. It can be laser cut, routed, welded, drilled, die-punched, bent hot or cold, or joined by screws, rivets, or bolts. Its toughness lets fabricators use sheets that can be thinner than with other common materials, resulting in lower material costs. Yet, it can be extruded into sheets as thick as 12 mm (1 /2 in.).

Spectar copolyester sheets vacuum-form at lower temperatures than other plastics without predrying. And when extruded at low temperatures the copolyester doesn't crystallize and develop a crystalline haze. Its edges can be polished with commercial edge-finishing equipment, sanding, solvents, flame polishing, or buffing. It forms clear, strong bonds with commercially available cements and solvents. It accepts screen-printing, painting, and hot stamping easily. Cleaning solutions won't turn the copolyester white and surface scratches or scuff marks remove easily with a heat gun.
