Conference highlights include virtual product development and CAD on the Internet

The National Design Engineering Show and Conference, held in Chicago’s McCormick Place South Mar. 10-13, will bring together more than 1,000 manufacturers and suppliers of products, materials, services, and technologies representing the entire field of design engineering.

The Design Engineering Conference program, comprised of over 50 sessions, will address such topics as virtual product development, creativity in engineering, the future of CAD on the Internet, and design for manufacturing. Special programs include ASME International short courses for continuing education credits and the Powder Metallurgy Design Seminar.

Design Show product pavilions this year include Rapid Prototyping, Mechatronics, Motors and Drives, Power Transmission/ Motor Control/ Fluid Power, and Contract Manufacturing, plus a new Fastening and Joining pavilion.

NDES is part of National Manufacturing Week, comprised of three inter-related exhibitions and a new Solutions Center, combined to offer a comprehensive forum to address the needs of the entire manufacturing process. These events are: the National Design Engineering Show & Conference; the National Industrial Automation, Integration, and Control Show and Conference; the National Plant Engineering and Management Show and Conference; and the Manufacturing Enterprise Information Technology Solutions Center.

The NMW Conference keynote speaker is Robert McDowell, vice president, Microsoft Corp. McDowell will address the current wave of information technology and the ways businesses are applying it.

Another NMW highlight is Space Exploration Day, Mar. 12. NASA administrator Dan Goldin will give a keynote presentation, followed by astronaut Jim Lovell, who will talk about his experiences in the Apollo 13 mission. As an added attraction, NASA will exhibit a full-scale mockup of one of the International Space Station’s science laboratories and the crew’s living quarters. This exhibit will be shown all four days on the Plant Engineering and Management Show floor.
