Two types of polyethylene (PE) tubing are made from nontoxic ingredients conforming to FDA standards. A linear low-density (LLDPE) version is lightweight and flexible. It transfers no odor or taste to contents, has good dielectric properties, and is chemically inert, forming a good barrier to gases, vapors, and moisture. The tubing resists stress cracking (over that of low-density PE), is durable, and is flexible at temperatures below 0°F. The coextruded version — PE-lined EVA — performs similar to LLDPE tubing but is more flexible because of its bonded EVA outer layer. It conforms to USP Class VI standards and can replace PTFE fluoropolymer tubing in applications that see temperatures below 100°F. LLDPE tubing is translucent and comes in 0.17 to 1.5-in. IDs. Select sizes are also stocked in black, red, blue, green, and yellow. PE-lined EVA comes in ID sizes from 0.125 to 1 in.
