Nanopositioning Stage

Aug. 18, 2005
A closed-loop positioning stage exerts 5 N of force in a 17-mm profile.

The motorized stage contains an optical encoder and a piezoelectric Squiggle motor. It supports vertical loads up to 0.5 kg with negligible heating. The motor uses ultrasonic vibrations of a threaded nut to rotate a mating screw, creating linear motion with 2-nm resolution, high stiffness, and little noise.
