Ceramic balls are: 40% less dense than steel balls, reducing centrifugal force and friction, letting them run faster and cooler; harder than steel for better wear resistance against hard particles, contaminants, and vibration; and inelastic for high bearing stiffness and lower deflection under load. They also last longer under poor lubrication conditions. Natural insulating properties prevent electrical arcing, making them ideal for large variable-speed electric motors. Standard types include single-row, deep-groove ball bearings with bore diameters from 5 to 110 mm; custom versions are available.
