Nanocrystalline magnesium - nanoMag LLC, a subsidiary of Thixomat Inc.

July 31, 2010
The material is tougher than standard magnesium and twice as strong.

nanoMAG magnesium sheet has a yield strength of 250 MPa -- over twice as strong as conventional magnesium -- and 10% elongation due to isotropic fine-grained strengthening. The material's strength matches that of carbon steel sheet at 75% lower weight.
Secondary thermo-mechanical processing of a Thixomolded sheet/plate results in ultra-fine-grain magnesium sheet. The metal is produced in nanoMAG’s “mini-mill” operation, discrete manufacturing cells capable of producing 500 tons/yr.
