A video at dunkermotor.com lets design engineers visualize tubular linear servomotor use. The fast-accelerating motors employ solid-state sensing to provide encoderless position information with repeatability of 12 µm to 250 in. per sec. Some traditional gear, ballscrew, and belt electromechanical linear drives are slower, and fluid-power actuators can introduce contamination while degrading control. Direct-drive linear electric motors are more accurate but expensive, difficult to install, or environmentally unsuitable. Flatbed linear motors deliver high force but suffer from cogging. U-channel types eliminate cogging but are thermally inefficient. Some tubular linear motors eliminate these issues.
