SCHUNK presents service robotics symposium

Now in its fourth year, SCHUNK Expert Days Service Robotics 2011 will be held February 23 to 24 at the company's automation plant in Brackenheim-Hausen, Germany. Research, development trends, and efficiency will be the main topics on the agenda. Symposium leaders include Dr. Henrik Christensen, KUKA Chair of Robotics at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and Martin Hägele of the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Engineering and Automation. Forest City Gear, Northwire Technical Cable achieve ITAR registration

Forest City Gear Co. Inc., Roscoe, Ill., supplies gears and gearwork for several types of military ordnance, as well as military aircraft, vehicles, instrumentation, and other defense devices. Many of the supplied products are subject to strict guidelines of the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) standard. The company completed its ITAR registration process in March, after more than a year's effort to comply with all applicable standards, procedures, and paperwork.

In a similar development, Northwire Technical Cable, Osceola, Wis., a manufacturer of technical and retractile cables and cable assemblies, has completed its U.S. State Department registration review regarding ITAR. This enables Northwire to better serve government and core government suppliers with custom military-grade cable. Through the ITAR application process, the company developed and implemented ITAR policies, procedures, and employee training.

Cone Drive turns 85

Cone Drive Gearing Solutions, Traverse City, Mich., celebrates its 85th year of operations. The company manufactures gearing products and develops custom gearing, and is known for its double-enveloping worm gear, a durable design that produces high torque in a small package. Eastern Bearings now Eastern Industrial Automation

Vacon achieves LEED certification

Vacon Inc., Vaasa, Finland, announces that their new Chambersburg, Pa. factory was awarded LEED Gold Certification as established by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute. The new building contains 16,323 sq. ft. of office space and 50,675 sq. ft. of lab, testing, assembly, and distribution space. Environmental features include reduced potable water usage, diverting construction waste from landfills, and using local materials. The factory also has an improved thermal envelope, high efficiency glazing, reduced interior lighting power density, and demand control ventilation. Vacon manufactures variable speed ac drives and serves 100 countries with more than 25 locations worldwide.
