Compact Motion Controller

June 3, 2004
The EPOS 24/1 digital motion controller works in position, velocity, and current mode.

COMPACT MOTION CONTROLLER

Available in two versions for brush or brushless motors, its small package size makes the device a candidate for controlling small motors. Dimensions are 55 3 40 3 25 mm (2.2 3 1.6 3 1 in.) and weight is 45 gm (1.6 oz). Communication is via RS-232 or CANopen. Working from 9 to 24 Vdc, the controller is capable of 1-A max continuous current and 2-A peak current. Efficiency is up to 85%. A 50-kHz switching frequency and built-in choke ensures compatibility with most low-inductance motors, while the sinusoidal commutation for brushless motors ensures minimal torque ripple and low noise. Maximum motor speed is 25,000 rpm for two-pole motors. Maximum encoder input frequency is 1 MHz. The controller accepts six digital inputs and two analog inputs, and has two digital outputs.
