Safety coupling

Torque overload protection is often overlooked in machine design until something jams, resulting in damage or downtime.

Torque overload protection is often overlooked in machine design until something jams, resulting in damage or downtime. A SK1 safety coupling that prevents such complications uses a ball-detent system that is backlash-free and will disengage within 1 to 3 msec when an overload is detected. It can be integrated into timing pulleys, sheaves, and sprocket wheels for a torque range of 0.1 to 1,500 N-m. The coupling is shaft mounted using a clamping hub, taper conical sleeve, or a pure keyway connection, for shaft sizes from 4 to 70 mm. Four versions are available including single position, multiposition, load holding, and free wheeling. They are factory preset to a specific disengagement torque, but can be adjusted following installation.
