Design Insights: A Vision of the Future of Vision; Save on Motion Design TCO; IDEA! Awards a Valuable Innovation Showcase

June 14, 2021
A review of the day’s top trending stories from Machine Design editors.

A Vision of the Future of Vision

The value of vision systems had been well-established long before artificial intelligence. Combining these two technologies is proving to provide greater knowledge about the quality of their processes.

At A3’s Vision Week’s virtual event last week, panelists from Intel, Landing AI, Integro Technologies and NVIDIA  discussed how the factory of the future will be driven by vision.

“What we’re starting to see is a lot of scale coming to market,” said David Austin, senior principal engineer at Intel. “There are solutions you can now get from systems integrators, there are solutions you can get from open source.”

In a Machine Design article, Piyush Modi, business & development chief strategist at NVIDIA, said among the recent developments, industrial inspection has becoming ubiquitous, cameras are getting even more precise vision skills and digital twin technologies are allowing design teams to test and refine machine systems.

“Machine vision is and always has been an enabler of digital transformation,” added David Dechow, principal vision systems architect at Integro Technologies. “Machine vision has been used in industrial settings for 50-plus years.”

Save on Motion Design System TCO

An upcoming Machine Design webinar will take a different look at motion system design. The July 15 webinar, presented by Machine Design and Bishop Wisecarver, looks at how the pandemic accelerated the need for reliable automation and data-driven intelligence in manufacturing, as well as providing tips on incorporating reliable motion systems that lower total cost of ownership and increase predictability of system performance.

Among the topics:

  • Considerations for deploying motion systems and mechatronics with lower cost of ownership.
  • The data behind how reliable motion systems provide value over the machine’s life.
  • Ways motion suppliers can support durable system design.

The webinar is July 15 at 2 p.m. EST. Register for the webinar by clicking here.

IDEA! Awards a Valuable Innovation Showcase

The 2021 IDEA! Awards will highlight the top innovative products created in the last year. The awards program is a showcase for new engineering solutions. It also provides great value for everyone who enters.

For a $500 entry fee, IDEA! Awards entrants receive:

  • A ¼-page article and image in the August issues of Machine Design and Hydraulics & Pneumatics to discuss the merits of the product.
  • A spot in the online version of the IDEA! Awards, which will include a link to the reader ballot. Only qualified engineers will vote on the IDEA! Awards, meaning your product will be judged by the people who also use the products each day.
  • Marking collateral, which will identify your product and company as a ‘IDEA! Awards Finalist.’
  • A chance to be voted one of the top products in your category, which will include an invitation to receive your awards during the IDEA! Conference Nov. 9-11 in Cleveland.

Also announced at that time will be the winner of the Big IDEA! Award, presented to the product with the single highest number of votes from all product categories.

Get your entry in today. Also, please plan to join us at the 2021 IDEA! Conference in Cleveland. It will be three days of great information and an opportunity to reconnect after more than a year apart.

Click here for a link to the entry form. It’s important to act soon: Entry deadline is July 9 at 5 p.m. CST.
