Volkswagen concept T

April 1, 2004
The concept T mixes an off-road vehicle with a sports car. The result: A coupe that's off-road friendly. A 241-hp V6 powers the T with a claimed top speed of 144 mph.

The concept T has 4Motion four-wheel drive as well as a four-speed automatic with Tiptronic, VW/Audi's clutchless manual control. The coupe rides on fat 19-in. wheels that add to its dune-buggy look. Wing doors swing out and up and are said to ease entry and exiting. The roof has two panels that sit in the upper section of the A-pillars and swing up and out.

Volkswagen equipped this vehicle with a Personal Mobility Gateway (PMG) system, essentially a mobile communication unit with wireless remote control that's similar to a PDA. Using PMG, the driver and front passenger can control functions such as air conditioning or the navigation system. The unit is removable and can serve as a PDA to access high-speed Internet and e-mail.
