Hydraulics hold components on shafts

The ETP Hydropress bushing from Zero-Max Inc., Plymouth, Minn., holds components on shafts ranging from 80 to 200 mm in diameter, and takes up little space. The bushings handle torques from 21,000 to 200,000 lb-ft using hydraulic pressure contained in a double-walled sleeve. Technicians use a grease pump to mount the bushing onto a shaft. Once pressurized with grease, the sleeve expands uniformly, exerting contact pressure evenly against the shaft and hub. There is no axial movement of the hub.

The device will hold gears, sprockets, pulleys, and similar components in a power-transmission system.

A second valve releases hydraulic pressure, letting the bushing return to its original dimensions, which simplifies the task of removing the bushing. This process can be repeated hundreds of times and the bushing will retain a high level of concentricity.
