It’s Legit: Fuel-Saving Engine Technology Validated

April 10, 2008
The Scuderi split-cycle engine design — billed as the world’s most fuel-efficient engine design — was recently analyzed at the Southwest Research Institute.

The independent lab’s study predicts the engine will have more power, torque, and efficiency under full load than state-of-the-art turbocharged engines. This study is the first of three to be published by the lab before the Scuderi Group assembles its first prototype engine. The study goes on to say the engine will also have more torque than most diesel engines, as well as only half to one-fifth of the NOx emissions of conventional car engines.

The Scuderi engine splits the intake/compression/ignition/exhaust cycle between two pistons, letting engine designers optimize pistons for specific tasks. (For more information, see “Rethinking engines,” Machine Design, Mar. 8, 2007.)

Results so far have exceeded our expectations,” says Sal Scuderi, president of the Scuderi Group. “This report shows the split-cycle engine is poised to take the automotive industry into a greener, more fuel efficient era.”

The Scuderi split-cycle engine can burn gasoline, diesel, biodiesel, and natural gas. It is also said to be more efficient than current engines and emit 80% fewer pollutants.
