LEDs illuminate DLP HDTVs

May 24, 2007
Phlatlight LED technology from Luminus Devices Inc., Woburn, Mass., goes in Digital Light Processing projection HDTVs with 1,080-pitch resolution, replacing arc lamps and color wheels.

LEDs illuminate DLP HDTVs

A Phlatlight PT120 chipset and a Texas Instruments xHD5 1,080-pitch DLP chipset illuminate Samsung 50, 56, and 61-in. rear-projection sets.

The PT120 combines red, green, and blue LEDs to produce sequential colored light at a 2.9-kHz refresh rate, 48 × faster than television frame rates, for smooth, stable color and excellent motion quality. TVs fitted with the chipsets produce 40% more colors than traditional lamp-based TVs by virtue of the LED's ability to individually create pure, primary colors.
