SAE Continues Environmental Focus at 2009 World Congress

March 17, 2009
Automotive engineers will gather in Detroit April 20-23 for the 2009 SAE World Congress. Engineering approaches to environmentally friendly and economically competitive vehicles will be on display.

The well-publicized problems of the auto industry aren’t dampening the industry’s appetite for green developments, judging by the SAE 2009 World Congress, April 20 to 23 at Detroit’s Cobo Center. This year’s show, hosted by Honda, is titled “Racing to Green Mobility.” Honda President and CEO Takeo Fukui will deliver the keynote at SAE’s banquet April 23.

Throughout the show, presentations and panel discussions will highlight efforts to make fuels, powertrains, electronics, safety equipment, and other aspects of the automotive industry more environmentally friendly. In the SAE Executive Business Theater, discussions will cover two critical topics facing automakers: Going green and staying competitive in tough economic times.

Attendees can sign up for any of 42 seminars to learn about topics ranging from Design of Experiments for Engineers to Fundamentals of Automotive Fuel Delivery Systems. At smaller technical sessions, engineers, scientists, and researchers will present recent work on issues including safety, emissions, materials, electronics, powertrains, and design and manufacturing.

Although as of press time the number of booth reservations is down from 2008’s show, over 200 firms have signed up to exhibit their wares, ranging from electronics, materials, and manufacturing products to fully integrated vehicles. In addition to show host Honda, OEMs at the show will include Ford, Nissan, Toyota, Chrysler, and General Motors. Bosch, a Tier One sponsor, heads up the suppliers exhibiting at the show which also include ABB, NKE, Delphi, Lubrizol, Zeroshift, and Borg Warner.
