Prototype of Scuderi split-cycle combustion engine unveiled at SAE Show

Two years ago it was only a well-developed concept. (See “Rethinking engines,” MACHINE DESIGN, March 3, 2007). But this year, the Scuderi Group unveiled a cutaway model of the proof-of-concept prototype for its split-cycle combustion engine at the SAE World Congress in Detroit. When built, a naturally aspirated Scuderi engine should generate only 20% of the toxic emissions put out by typical car engines. It should also get significantly better gas mileage than today’s gas engines, says the company which plans on developing a turbocharged version of the engine by 2010.
